The most important architectural complex of Western Christianity in the Middle Ages stands in Pisa since the second half of 11th century. Already during construction, the long building time, the numerous authors that have succeeded and the artistic climate in constant evolution caused variations in a set that should have been in a perfect consonance. This study is searching the first project, the creative idea, the cultural background the complex is built from and especially the extraordinary synthesis of different disciplines that converge in a unrepeatable, unique reality.
